5 Best Beaches in the Scottish Highlands: A Complete Guide from Inverness

When most people picture the Scottish Highlands, they imagine towering mountains, mysterious lochs and ancient castles. Beaches? Not so much. That’s what makes discovering the Highlands’ coastline such a wonderful surprise.

From sweeping golden sands to secluded coves with crystal-clear water, Scotland is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe. On a sunny day, the turquoise sea and white sand could easily be mistaken for the Caribbean (until you dip your toes in the water!). The sea is refreshingly cold all year round, but the scenery is worth every visit.

Whether you’re looking for a peaceful stroll, a family day out, wildlife spotting or the perfect sunset, these beaches deserve a place on your Highlands itinerary. Here are the best beaches in the Scottish Highlands:

1. Dores Beach

Dores Beach
Distance from Inverness: 20 minutes (8 miles / 13 km)

How to get there: Follow the B852 from Inverness along the eastern shore of Loch Ness. The drive itself is beautiful, with plenty of opportunities to stop and admire views across the loch.
There’s a free car park just a short walk from the beach.

What makes it unique?

Unlike the busier viewpoints around Loch Ness, Dores Beach feels wonderfully spacious and peaceful. Many visitors come hoping for a glimpse of Nessie, while others simply enjoy skipping stones, picnicking or watching paddleboarders drift across the loch.

Local tip: After your walk, stop at the nearby Dores Inn for lunch or a drink overlooking the loch.

2. Nairn Beach

Nairn Beach
Distance from Inverness: Around 30 minutes (17 miles / 27 km)

How to get there: Drive east along the A96 to Nairn. Parking is available near the beach, and there are regular trains and buses connecting Inverness with the town.

What makes it unique?

Nairn enjoys one of the sunniest and driest climates in Scotland, making it a favourite seaside destination for both visitors and locals. The beach is backed by attractive Victorian buildings, colourful beach huts and a lovely promenade, giving it a classic British seaside feel.

Local tip: Visit in the evening for one of the Moray Firth’s spectacular sunsets. The colours over the water can be breathtaking.

3. Rosemarkie Beach

Rosemarkie Beach
Distance from Inverness: Around 35 minutes (20 miles / 32 km)

How to get there: Cross the Kessock Bridge onto the Black Isle before following signs to Rosemarkie. Parking is available close to the beach.

What makes it unique?

Just around the headland lies Chanonry Point, one of the best places in Europe to see bottlenose dolphins from the shore. Many visitors spend the morning relaxing on Rosemarkie Beach before walking to Chanonry Point to watch the dolphins feed as the tide changes.

Local tip: Check the tide times before visiting. Dolphins are most commonly seen around an hour after low tide.

4. Findhorn Beach

Findhorn Beach
Distance from Inverness: Around 45 minutes (30 miles / 48 km)

How to get there: Take the A96 towards Forres before following signs to Findhorn.
There’s a spacious car park beside the beach.

What makes it unique?

The beach sits beside the charming village of Findhorn, known for its artistic community, independent cafés and relaxed atmosphere. It’s the perfect combination of beach, nature and village life.

Local tip: Bring a picnic and allow time to explore the village after your walk. It’s one of the Highlands’ hidden gems.

5. Achmelvich Beach

Achmelvich Beach
Distance from Inverness: Around 2 hours 30 minutes (110 miles / 177 km)

How to get there: Take the A9 north before joining the A837 towards Lochinver. From there, follow the single-track road to Achmelvich. The drive is an adventure in itself, winding through some of the Highlands’ most dramatic landscapes.
There is a car park close to the beach, along with toilets and a small campsite nearby.

What makes it unique?

Achmelvich is one of the few Highland beaches where people genuinely swim, kayak and paddleboard during the summer months. The shallow bay is sheltered and calm, making it one of the most family-friendly beaches in the north-west Highlands.

Local tip: Set off early from Inverness. The drive is long but spectacular, and you’ll want plenty of time to stop at viewpoints along the way.

Before You Head to the Beach…

A few things to keep in mind:

• Don’t judge Scotland’s beaches by the temperature! Even in summer, the sea is chilly but that’s part of the adventure.
• Pack layers. Sunshine can quickly give way to a cool sea breeze.
• Bring binoculars. Many Highland beaches are excellent for spotting dolphins, seals and seabirds.
• Leave no trace. These beautiful places stay beautiful because visitors help look after them.
• Check the weather before setting off. A clear day can completely transform the coastline.

The beaches close to Inverness are perfect for a half-day trip, but if you’re prepared to drive a little further, you’ll discover some of Scotland’s most breathtaking coastal scenery.

Are there really white sand beaches in the Scottish Highlands?

Absolutely! It’s one of Scotland’s best-kept secrets.
Beaches such as Achmelvich Beach, Mellon Udrigle Beach and Balnakeil Beach are famous for their powdery white sand and crystal-clear turquoise water. On a sunny day, they look more like the Caribbean than northern Scotland!

Can you swim at Highland beaches?

Yes, but be prepared for cold water even in the middle of summer.
Many locals and visitors enjoy swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking and even wild swimming. If you’re not keen on taking a dip, the beaches are still perfect for walking, picnicking and simply soaking up the spectacular scenery.

Which beach is best for families?

Nairn Beach is ideal for families thanks to its wide sandy beach, promenade, nearby cafés and public facilities. Achmelvich Beach is another favourite if you’re exploring the north-west Highlands, with calm, shallow water that’s perfect for paddling.
