Highland Trails & Waterfalls: Must-See Wonders Just Moments From Your Highlands Stay

Fairy Glen Falls
One of the best things about staying in the Scottish Highlands is how quickly the wild landscape finds you. Step outside, follow a quiet woodland path, and before long you might hear it: the soft rush of water tumbling over rock, the call of birds through the trees, or the distant sound of the sea.

Some of the Highlands’ most magical places aren’t the ones you see on postcards. They’re the hidden glens, peaceful trails, and waterfalls tucked quietly into forests and hillsides, often just a short drive from where you’re staying.

If you’re looking to slow down and explore at your own pace, here are a few Highland trails and hidden falls worth discovering during your stay.

The Enchanting Woodland Walk: Fairy Glen Falls, Rosemarkie

Fairy Glen Falls, Rosemarkie
Just outside the coastal village of Rosemarkie lies one of the most charming short walks in the region: the trail to Fairy Glen Falls.

The path winds through a peaceful woodland glen, following a small burn that leads to two beautiful waterfalls hidden among mossy rocks and tall trees. The walk is gentle and relatively short, making it perfect for a relaxed morning adventure or an afternoon wander.

The glen itself has a touch of Highland folklore. In the past, locals decorated the spring pool with flowers during a traditional well-dressing ceremony, believing that fairies would keep the water clean.

Today, the magic is still there in the quiet forest, the sound of water rushing over stone, and the feeling that you’ve stumbled across somewhere wonderfully hidden.

A Classic Highland Waterfall: Rogie Falls

Rogie Falls
For a slightly bigger waterfall experience, a short drive inland brings you to Rogie Falls, one of the Highlands’ most impressive cascades.

A scenic forest trail leads to a suspension bridge where you can watch the powerful falls surge through a rocky gorge. The surrounding woodland makes the walk especially beautiful in autumn, when the trees turn shades of gold and copper.

If you’re lucky, you may even spot salmon leaping upstream during the late summer months, one of the most remarkable sights in the Highlands.

A Hidden Gem Near Loch Ness: Lady Falls

Lady Falls
If you’re exploring around Loch Ness, keep an eye out for Lady Falls (also known as Culachy Falls) located near Fort Augustus at the southern end of Loch Ness.

The trail winds through quiet woodland and farmland (perfect for wildlife watching) before revealing a striking cascade pouring into a calm pool below.

The route is peaceful and slightly more adventurous than many local walks, making it a rewarding discovery for those who enjoy finding places a little off the main path.

It’s the kind of spot that feels almost untouched… a perfect place to pause, breathe, and listen to the steady rhythm of the water.

The Beauty of Wandering

Scottish Highlands
The Highlands are full of places like these.

A path through ancient woodland.
A hidden waterfall you hear before you see.
A quiet trail where the only sounds are wind, water, and birds overhead.

Many of these walks aren’t long or difficult, they’re simply beautiful. And often, they’re only a short drive from the villages, beaches, and cosy stays that make the region so special.

Slow Moments, Highland Style

At Highlands Perfect Stay, we believe the best experiences often happen away from busy itineraries.

A morning walk through a glen.
A waterfall discovered at the end of a quiet trail.
An afternoon spent exploring the landscape at your own pace.

The Highlands reward curiosity and sometimes, all it takes is following a small path into the trees.

Because here, adventure doesn’t always mean climbing the highest mountain.

Sometimes it simply means taking the trail that leads to the sound of water.

Eas a' Chual Aluinn, Scotland's (and Britain's) highest waterfall. Loch Glencoul and Loch Beag in the background. You can visit the upper part of it, it's quite a boggy hike, starting at Loch na Gainmhich above Kylesku, about 10km in total.

Where is the Skyfall waterfall?

Waterfalls over the River Etive. Glen Etive, Highlands, Scotland. Glen Etive has been used as the backdrop to many movies, among them Braveheart and Skyfall.

Where is the Scottish fairy water?

Located on the northern slopes of the magnificent Black Cuillin range, Skye's famous Fairy Pools are beautiful crystal-clear blue pools on the Allt Coire a' Mhadaidh (Burn of the Dog), which can be seen snaking down the hillside of Coire na Creiche into Glen Brittle where it becomes the River Brittle.
