North Coast 500: A 3-Day Itinerary for a Scenic Road Trip

The North Coast 500 is often described as Scotland’s most scenic road trip and once you’re on it, you’ll understand why. It’s not just about getting from one place to another, but about everything you see along the way: dramatic coastlines, quiet lochs, winding mountain passes, and small villages that feel completely untouched by time.

If you’ve got three days, here’s how to experience some of its most beautiful stretches without missing the moments that make it unforgettable.

Day 1: Inverness → Applecross (Mountains, Lochs & a Legendary Pass)

Inverness
Leaving Inverness, the landscape of the North Coast 500 starts to shift almost immediately. One of the first worthwhile stops is Loch Maree often considered one of the most beautiful lochs in the Highlands, with its scattered islands and mountain backdrop.

Further along, you’ll pass near Beinn Eighe National Nature Reserve, a great place to stretch your legs if you’re up for a short walk surrounded by ancient pinewoods and rugged peaks.

Then comes the highlight: the drive over Bealach na Bà. This narrow, winding mountain pass climbs steeply with hairpin bends and sweeping views across the coast, it’s one of the most dramatic drives in the UK.

At the top, take a moment. The views stretch out endlessly, especially on a clear day.

You’ll descend into Applecross, a remote coastal village where the pace instantly slows. If you can, stay overnight here. Walk along the shoreline, watch the light change over the water, and if you’re hungry, the Applecross Inn is famous for its fresh seafood.

Day 2: Applecross → Ullapool (Wild Coastlines & Hidden Beaches)

Applecross
This stretch of the North Coast 500 feels raw and untamed in the best way. As you continue north, you’ll pass through Torridon: an area known for its towering, almost otherworldly mountains.

Keep an eye out for Red Point Beach, where soft white sand meets turquoise water (yes, in Scotland!). It’s the kind of place that makes you stop the car without thinking twice.

Another great pause is Gairloch, a small village with views across the Minch and plenty of cosy spots for a coffee or lunch.

As you continue, the road opens up into wide, empty stretches before arriving in Ullapool. Sitting right on the water, it’s a lively little harbour town with colourful houses, local pubs, and a relaxed atmosphere. It’s a perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring, maybe with a walk along the pier or dinner overlooking the loch.

Day 3: Ullapool → Inverness (Quiet Beauty & Hidden Gems)

Ullapool
The final stretch of the North Coast 500 back to Inverness feels softer, but no less beautiful. Think rolling hills, mirror-like lochs, and long, peaceful roads.

A lovely stop along the way is Corrieshalloch Gorge, where a short walk takes you to a dramatic suspension bridge overlooking a deep canyon and waterfall, it’s a quick detour, but absolutely worth it.

Further on, you might pass by Rogie Falls, especially impressive after rainfall and a great spot for a short woodland walk.

As you get closer to Inverness, the landscape gently eases you out of the wildness of the west coast, with farmland and forests replacing the rugged coastline.

Can you drive the North Coast 500 in 3 days?

Absolutely. But what makes this route special isn’t how much you fit in…it’s the moments you don’t plan. The unexpected beach. The viewpoint you almost missed. The small café you stop at on a whim. So as you go, stay curious. Pull over often. And let Scotland surprise you.

What is the North Coast 500 route in Scotland?

The North Coast 500 (NC500) is a scenic 500-mile road trip route that starts and ends in Inverness. It loops around the northern Scottish Highlands, taking you through coastal roads, mountain landscapes, and remote villages, often compared to Scotland’s version of Route 66.

Do you need a car to drive the North Coast 500?

Yes, having a car is the best (and most practical) way to explore the North Coast 500. Public transport is limited in many parts of the Highlands, especially along remote sections of the route. Driving allows you to stop at viewpoints, beaches, and small villages at your own pace which is a big part of the experience.
